The Department of Botany (BM) houses a major international collection of over six million preserved specimens of algae, diatoms, lichens, mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants. The collection is of great historical importance, dating back to the 16th century.
The Botany Department's 60 scientists are involved in many different areas of research based on the collections. Research areas include biodiversity, classification, evolution, biogeography, molecular systematics, conservation and ethnobotany.

Latest news and events in the Botany Department
The Department of Botany is currently preparing to relocate a large part of its collection to a new building, the new Darwin Centre. This is expected to take several months. Please be advised therefore that until further notice we are regrettably unable to respond to e-mail, telephone, postal or other enquiries, except where these relate specifically to our bluebells distribution project. We expect to resume a full enquiries service towards the end of 2009. Thank you for your patience.
